WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN

Looking at a recent picture of myself as a baby, where I was staring up at a mobile made up of some fat caterpillar cartoon-bodied butterflies, made me think about our perspective and how it changes as we grow up. Here I am, (in the moment of the photograph) on my pillow and bedspread from… Read more »

I LOVE YOU

My first gallery based solo exhibition in Cape Town is around the corner. The exhibition is titled: ‘I love you’ and will open on Valentine’s Day 2018. To not get stuck on immediate stereotypes of love, I thought I should explain rather the symbolism behind the exhibition and my work. In 2015 I created ‘Love… Read more »

Superdry – An Orca in the desert

Superdry – An Orca in the desert

Picture: Jonx Pillemer Photography Afrikaburn 2017 – an unforgettable experience on more than one level. In this post you will read about our experience at Afrikaburn 2017, themed ‘play’ as the good the bad (the sad) and the ugly. The experience was one of extreme mixed emotions – moments so brightly lit by the beauty… Read more »

Blowing off some steam

Blowing off some steam

Last week, after a quick workout that I only got to so late in the week, I decided to squeeze in another 10 minutes to steam. Sitting down in the steam room I reflected (as I often do) on just how good exercise makes me feel. I am 32 this year and for the past… Read more »

Fine Carnival Art

Fine Carnival Art

Superdry will be in the Cape Town Carnival tomorrow and I am beyond excited. Partly because I have only moved to Cape Town a few years ago, and I feel so honoured to have one of my artworks included in such an incredible event that I feel really reflects the creative vibrancy of the mother… Read more »

For the Love of God

For the Love of God

I recently watched Damien Hirsts’ documentary -Thoughts, Work, Life (2012). It struck me how much emphasis was put on the value of: “For the Love of God”. In the part of the documentary where ‘’ For the Love of God’’ is presented, it is introduced with a few short clips of Hirst being interviewed. In… Read more »

Writing Again – Drawing Again

Writing Again – Drawing Again

So here goes – my first post after a long battle with writers block. Since I last posted, I have been drawing non stop, as well as moving and running my little family. I am still working hard on an exhibition, though I am not sure where and when it will be exhibit. My hopes… Read more »

Emotion Pictures

Emotion Pictures

I find myself haunted after seeing the image of little, three year old Syrian refugee, Aylan Kurdi (as well as the bodies of other children) washed up on the Turkish beach. After discussing my relationship to images in a recent blog post, I mentioned that I have a very good memory of the images I… Read more »

#tbt #7 Drawing out the subject

I have unexpectedly been included in a group exhibition next week, at a gallery where I am hopefully having a drawing exhibition later on next year- in Johannesburg. I am not sure what the other artists on the show will be exhibiting this coming week. I do however know that I am included so that… Read more »

#tbt #twentyjourneys #6

I found myself attending a documentary style photographic exhibition by three young photographers the other night. At first, seeing the exhibition title “Twenty Journey”, to be honest, I was not intrigued. It was only after I saw twenty guests attending on my friendship list on Facebook that I started becoming interested. However I was still… Read more »

#tbt #The Conceptual Catwalk #5

I now find myself planning a drawing exhibition. I approached a gallery I like (there are not many) on my visit to Johannesburg. Having done a lot of conceptual art of late, I had to ask myself why and how; do I suddenly turn to drawing. There is this weird thing- conceptual art often seems… Read more »

Filling the conceptual void..

Filling the conceptual void..

Over a lovely Troyville hotel lunch (one of my favourite spots whilst I lived in Johannesburg) with some fellow artists ,and art collectors, I realised exactly what it is that keeps me creating and being enthusiastic about art and art practice. The artists that joined me for lunch (12-30 years my peers) seem to have… Read more »

JUST GONNA STAND THERE AND WATCH ‘Love The Way YOU Lie’ BURN..

JUST GONNA STAND THERE AND WATCH ‘Love The Way YOU Lie’ BURN..

‘Love The Way You Lie’ is definitely one of my more difficult artworks to write about, if not the hardest one. I like to think the reason behind this is the power of the artwork- I guess mostly it is the effect or power this artwork possesses over me. Creating this monumentally large and very… Read more »

#tbt #GUNBOX #4

#tbt #GUNBOX #4

The artwork consisted of a GUNBOX; a device used for security, particularly on farms. It is attached to the farm gate, and in case a trespasser steps onto the gate to try enter the property an empty bullet is fired. The device was secretly installed in the Wits gallery by the artist for the Martienzen… Read more »

#tbt #BRICK #3

This performance art was based on My second year work, a plaster cast of a tableaux self portrait- which was sanded down to a brick/or single building block. The act signifies a type of shedding or purging and bears some resemblance to religious acts, particularly a return to simplicity in Buddhist belief. By sanding down… Read more »

Love The Way You Lie #2 #Hollywood #Lies

To my surprise, when I tell people I am doing a sculpture at Afrikaburn, some of these people’s immediate reaction is that they do not agree with Afrikaburn’s ethos. I get the sense that my fellow people do not believe that Afrikaburn is a place where ‘real’ art should be showcased. Fine Art, with ‘real’… Read more »

#tbt #CCV #2

My #throwbackthursday for this week is a work I did in my third year of study at WITS School of the arts. This was one of my favourite artworks I produced during my studies. Funny enough CCV could only be produced during my studies, and is a direct comment of my view and experience of… Read more »

#tbt #1 #namechange

I have decided that it might be a good idea to introduce one of my older artworks to the public every now and again. What better day to do it than #throwbackthursdays! Please keep a look out for these posts on Thursdays every week. The artwork I chose to introduce is one where I changed… Read more »

Love The Way You Lie

Love The Way You Lie

I went to Afrikaburn festival 2014. It’s a festival like Burningman in the desert (the beautiful Karoo). See www.afrikaburn.com . The only knowledge I had of the festival before going was a flash of what was shown on the Afrikaans news a few years earlier.. Needless to say the image of a burning sculpture I… Read more »

Me Blogging

So I am finally blogging.. After endless efforts to create a Website that is not static with the aesthetic and feel of a museum catalogue- Sean O’ Tooles’ words: A Stevenson Catalogue ???? I have decided that for starters a blog might be a more accurate depiction of who I am and what I am… Read more »
